INTERVIEW WITH BELDA FROM IMAGINARY VOYAGE

This time MassiveWhat? managed to interview one of the DJs from San Francisco, although she has not yet issued a remix or a single, but her set of tracks and how she plays is exactly why we think that she is one good DJ.

And it turns out, that she is also Indonesian. We’re not going to take too long on this, let's have a chat with this person who wants to take us to the IMAGINARY VOYAGE

1. Hi, how are you Belda??

Hello, I’m doing well, thanks for asking.

2. We heard you got Indonesian mix or blood, where is it from?

I'm a concoction of everything.. haha.. My father is a full on Chinese born Indonesian and my mother is Indonesian mixed Chinese blood and other IMAGINARY races. I'm not quite sure what that would make me, but I can say I am Indonesian.

3. Could you tell us you’re the story behind your amazing impossible world mixtapes in one of the noise from the void shows?

Impossible World is one of the most memorable gig I had. I love the Void flyer that Jeno made for the show and the introduction that was written on Noise from the blog. I was honored to be invited as a guest DJ. I remember I was very nervous and excited at the same time, but by the end of the night I was very happy because it turns out just the way I wanted it to be. Each track that I played that night has sentimental meaning to me personally and each one of them has inspired me to start playing records. I had a great time playing on Noise From the Void for sure. We had a little rave going on at Jeno’s that night. The indo-disco posse was there to support me and they brought drinks and cookies. But I’m still wondering what happened to the cookies.. I only ate one cookie. In the beginning I was planning to play for two hours, but I got carried away and didn't realized I was playing records for almost five hours straight. I guess that's what happen when you’re in the VOID.. it makes you lose yourself.

4. So, tell us what you think about good music and how people have different way in appreciating music, how do you appreciate good music?

Good music makes me feel good. There are many ways to appreciate good music. I personally like to appreciate music by buying records and playing it. Maybe sharing it with the people who would appreciate it as much as I do.

5. Talking about imaginary voyage, can you tell us more about this new project of yours..

I never dreamed of being a DJ, let alone having my own radio show. Jeno and Sunshine Jones, whom both have radio shows on 90hz.org encouraged me to have a show there. They believed that I was ready to host my own radio show. So I took advantage of the opportunity and finally agreed to do a show on 90hz. IMAGINARY VOYAGE is about my imaginary life journey. It could be anything and it could go towards any directions that you can imagine. I really enjoy hosting my own radio show. It keeps me busy and makes me more creative at the same time. I like playing blind during the show because it has no restrictions in a sense of direction, that's what I love about it and I can just go with the flow of the music. It's the only time where I can set my mind free and let my music takes me to my IMAGINARY VOYAGE.

6. Is there any album or tracks coming up from you?

I don't have anything at this moment. I never really worked on making music before. The only time I have ever worked on music was with Jeno. We made an edit once but never had the time to finished it.

7. There is a case in Indonesia, which whom can be so complicated to play "minority" music, how about in US? can you enlight us a bit on this matter?

I think it's the same anywhere in the world. The disco community here in San Francisco is quite small as well. That's what's makes it very interesting. We have a good intimate group of people who are rooting for the same kind of music. On top of that we all support and respect each others music. Music is about taste, you can't really judge people from their taste in music. Most people are attracted to commercial music because it's easy to listen to and very catchy. It took a lot of patience sometimes to be able to understand the kind of music that we like. It took me quite sometime to understand the music that I like to play now. You need to get to know the music to be able to enjoy it passionately. I always encourage people to dance when they're at a party.. get to know the music and enjoy it.

8. So for the last question, any plan to have a gig in Indonesia?

I don't have any plans to play anywhere in Indonesia yet. However, I'm looking forward to play sometime soon. ;)

"Impossible is Nothing" like Jeno's said for the first appreance as a guest DJ, but she's doing very well for the "Impossible Worlds - Belda". And now she's running a live radio show at 90hz. We hope, that it can still travels for a good music and was always more mixes that are pleasing to hear. And now she's going on her IMAGINARY...

Trip Hop

The term 'trip hop' was coined by the English tabloids. The style, which employs the use of down tempo break beats infused together with hypnotic atmospheric timbres, emerged around the early 1990s. Massive Attack, credited with being 'one of the pioneering forces of [this] British dance genre, released their 'trend-setting' debut album Blue Lines in 1991. The recording, described as a 'blend of rap, deep reggae and soul [which] was provocative and rich in texture, set the pace for many groups producing non-techno British dance music at that time. Massive Attack asserted: 'We don't ever make direct dance music. You've got to be able to listen and then dance.

During the early stages of the genre's development, the bastion of the trip hop movement was Bristol, England. Bristol has a high percentage of Caribbean immigrants, which probably explains the heavy influence reggae music and Rastafarian culture have played in the genre. Massive Attack's 1994 second release Protection,, although considered to be 'a disappointment compared to their debut, demonstrates this connection to the reggae culture - further attested to by the Mad Professor's dub re-mix of the album in 1995 ( later released as No Protection.).

The Bristol trip hop scene also spawned Tricky and Portishead - more commercially successful bands than the pioneering Massive Attack. Portishead's seminal and critically acclaimed 1994 album, Dummy, is credited with bringing trip hop to the British mainstream and American alternative scenes. The media-wary band members Geoff Barrow, vocalist Beth Gibbons, guitarist Adrian Utley and drummer Dave MacDonald refused to tour and give interviews, and instead used music videos as the main promotional device for the album.

Tricky (born Adrian Thaws) was one of the original members of the Wild Bunch, the 1980s dance band that later became Massive Attack. He appeared on Massive Attack's Blue Lines, (providing the rap component) before leaving the group to start a solo career.

Tricky collaborated with Martina, described by Rolling Stone as a 'teenage vocalist [with an] ethereal voice [that complements Tricky's] prickly, throaty vocals, and released his debut single, 'Aftermath' in 1993. This was soon followed by the release of Maxinquaye. (1995). The album received an overwhelmingly positive response, entering the United Kingdom charts at # 2. The follow-up album (Pre-Millennium Tension,) was disparaged by music critics, but was a commercial success in Britain and (the new market of) America.

Post-trip hop

After the success of Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky albums in '94 and '95, a new generation of trip hop artists emerged with a more standardized sound. Notable "post-trip-hop" artists include Morcheeba, Sneaker Pimps, Alpha, Mudville and Cibo Matto. These artists integrated trip hop with other genres - including, but not limited to, ambient, R&B, breakbeat, drum 'n' bass, acid jazz, and new age. The first printed record for the use of the term "post-trip-hop" was as late as October 2002 when British newspaper The Independent used it to describe Second Person and their hybrid sound. Trip hop has now developed into a diversified genre that is no longer limited to the "deep, dark style" of the early years, eliminating the original impression of trip hop as "dark and gloomy".

In the piece "Monyet Kota" there is a new touch that's never been heard before in other tracks by Jonathan Kusuma, it is coming thick on the 4/4 Dub bassline, mixed with the sound of analog synth, which gives this track a krautrock feel in it as well.

All tracks are written and performed by Jonathan Kusuma.

Jonathan Kusuma – Misi - EP

“Once again, Kusuma has retained a “wild” structure of sounds in his latest musical pieces.

He composes, constructs and performs the rapturous rhythm and sounds of one vital mission: preserving the life of his own. It may have given fears and resignations, but it consequently strained resistances and hopes.

The mission has taught him so much…”

Jonathan Kusuma has release "Misi" his latest EP, it contains three tracks of his works. From our perspective, one of his tracks who called Misi consists techno as it's main baseline, followed by other elements of traditional Indonesian musical instruments. Which will takes us into the realms of exotic psychedelic-techno.

OMINOUS

Days when trust becomes such suspicious word, days when greed justified as a manner of exaggerated survival, days when searches of the truth are considered nonsensical. These are hints of many problems that we stare eye to eye at. All and all synergized and it will become a sustainable destruction, the world will become a self destructive experiment for humanity and eventually the Mother Nature herself.

The universe has sent us omens to the rescue. But alas, we are blinded. Even at the critical flip of the equilibrium we stood unaware in our blissful ignorance. The dark age of men is here once again.

But problems are meant to be solved. The solution will be a long journey of countless efforts, trialed errors and salvations. All we need to do now is to take the first step, and that will be the awareness, an awareness that shouts and breaks the spell within a lullaby of ignorance.

Keep in mind that in the end we will all prevail as one and we shall dance to commemorate the beauty of this process in every step of the way.

This is a call in search of a response to that very first step.

We present you OMINOUS.

A.R.E. Weapons

Bassist Matthew McAuley, synthesizer player Thomas Bullock, guitarist Ryan Noel and vocalist Brain F. McPeck formed A.R.E. Weapons, a New York City-based group that began to generate a stir within underground circles in 2001 for their aggressive, confrontational shows and their buzzing and willfully ramshackle electro-rock. During a visit to New York, Pulp's Jarvis Cocker heard the band and encouraged Rough Trade's Geoff Travis to sign them. He obliged, and the band's debut single, Street Gang, was out by the end of July 2001. A second single, New York Muscle, was released in November, and the group was also featured on Electro Mogul's Electroclash compilation, which was out by the end of that year. Bullock left and was replaced by manager and third musician Paul Sevigny (brother of actress Chloe Sevigny), and the band's self-titled debut album finally arrived in April of 2003 but suffered a tremendous setback when Noel died of a heroin overdose the following year. The remaining members continued to record; they released 2005's Free in the Streets on the Defend Music label, followed by Modern Mayhem in 2007. Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

Gorillaz - Stylo

Gorillaz - Stylo (review)

Gorillaz' third album Plastic Beach, which ostensibly centers on a remote island built completely of post-consumer detritus, promises to be as loosely conceptual and vaguely political as Gorillaz and Demon Days. Leaked first single "Stylo" does more than its part in keeping with Albarn's "DJ/rupture with a million-dollar budget" approach: high-level guests and a global patchwork for a backing track. There's not a Gorillaz song that can trace its lineage to one geographic place, and "Stylo" feels drawn from the time when people thought hip-hop might turn the Bronx into a borderless musical melting pot. The buzzy, bass-heavy electro bed recalls Afrika Bambaataa's Kraftwerk fixation, and the alternately droning and whooshing synths work well with a lyrical fixation on capturing electricity-- makes me think of a DJ tapping into a lamp post to power his speakers.

Albarn's vocal contributions are typically laconic and textural, and Mos Def's fuzzy transmission of a few bars at the track's end-- he appears to literally phone in his part-- makes him feel more like a guest on Space Ghost. Not to worry, though: Bobby Womack's outsize, ragged freestyle invests "Stylo" with an unhinged-sounding take on the bleak passion of his own hardscrabble autobiography, culminating in a scream at the end of his second verse that suggests he's privy to something more frightening. It's the point where "Stylo"-- nothing if not streamlined, otherwise---goes off the rails for a brief second, before righting itself again.
